Overview

The Battle of Cape Finisterre 1805 already names the two Spanish ships taken on 22 July 1805: San Rafael (80) and Firme (74). They were in Gravina Federico — Spanish Admiral’s contingent of Villeneuve Pierre-Charles — French Admiral’s Combined Fleet.¹

The Day

This note covers those prizes that day only. Prize-court money and later British names stay on RESEARCH_QUEUE. Individual ship notes now cover the capture day only. Combined casualty totals stay status/contested on the battle note.

Calder Robert — British Admiral had 15 ships; Villeneuve had 20. Neither admiral renewed. Calder cited the prizes among his reasons. Villeneuve turned south instead of on to Brest.²
