Overview

The Battle of the Nile 1798 — Overview already says the victory triggered the Second Coalition 1798–1802. Britain used the prestige of 1 August 1798 to assemble Russia, Austria, the Ottoman Empire, and Naples against France.1

The Alliance

This note covers that alliance only. Campo Formio, later campaigns on land, and the Peace of Amiens stay on RESEARCH_QUEUE.

The Nile destroyed eleven of thirteen French ships of the line in Aboukir Bay — Egypt and stranded Bonaparte’s army in Egypt. That Mediterranean reverse is the licensed cause given on the battle note.2
