Overview

The Battle of Cape St Vincent 1797 — Overview already says Spain joined France against Britain in October 1796 under the second Treaty of San Ildefonso. That is the alliance behind the 14 February 1797 battle.¹

The Alliance

This note covers that alliance and the CSV background only. Treaty text, Godoy, and later San Ildefonso instruments stay on RESEARCH_QUEUE.

The British Mediterranean fleet was forced out. Corsica was evacuated in November 1796 and Jervis John Earl St Vincent — Biography withdrew to the Tagus. Córdova sailed from Cartagena on 1 February 1797 to escort a mercury convoy to Cadiz — Spanish Naval Port, then rendezvous with the French Brest fleet for the planned invasion of Britain. The battle followed on 14 February.²
