Overview

On 14 February 1797, at the Battle of Cape St Vincent 1797 — Overview, Nelson Horatio — Biography Overview’s officers christened the San Nicolás–San José boarding “Nelson’s Patent Bridge for Boarding First Rates.” The event record is already on that battle note. This page is the name, not a second battle overview.1

The Day

This note covers 14 February 1797 only. About 1:30pm Nelson wore HMS Captain — 74-gun Third Rate out of the line. When San Nicolás (84) and San José (112) collided and became entangled, Captain ran alongside San Nicolás. Berry Edward — British Captain led the boarding party through her stern gallery. Nelson then led the same party across San Nicolás onto San José. Four Spanish ships of the line were taken that day.2
