At the Battle of Cape St Vincent 1797 — Overview HMS Excellent — 74-gun Third Rate then passed between Nelson’s HMS Captain — 74-gun Third Rate and her opponents, raking San Nicolás — Spanish 84-gun Third Rate and San José — Spanish 112-gun First Rate with double-shotted broadsides.¹

The Rake

This note covers that rake only. A shot-weight table and a later Excellent career stay on RESEARCH_QUEUE.

HMS Excellent — 74-gun Third Rate already used the strikings of Salvador del Mundo and San Ysidro. Nelson’s Patent Bridge for Boarding First Rates already used the boarding. Do not recopy “a friend in need is a friend indeed.”²
