He had thirteen ships of the line — L’Orient (120, flag), three 80s including Guillaume Tell under Villeneuve Pierre-Charles — French Admiral, and nine 74s — plus four frigates, about 10,000 men, anchored bow-to-stern from north-west to south-east. Foley led five British ships inside that line. L’Orient caught fire around 9pm and exploded around 10pm. About 1,700 French were killed, including Brueys.²
