The Board

Southey says that soon after his return, on the eighth of April 1777, Nelson passed his examination for a lieutenancy. Capt. Suckling sat at the head of the board, and when the examination had ended rose and introduced him to the examining captains as his nephew. They wondered he had not named the relationship before; he said he did not wish the younker to be favoured.²
