Overview

This is the cockpit sub-note of the Battle of Trafalgar 1805 — Overview. About 1:15 pm on 21 October 1805 a marksman in the mizzentop of Redoutable — French 74-gun Ship shot Nelson Horatio — Biography Overview on the quarterdeck of HMS Victory — Overview. The ball entered the left shoulder, passed through the lung, and lodged in the spine. He died at 4:30 pm.¹

In the Cockpit

Hardy Thomas Masterman — Captain HMS Victory was on the quarterdeck when Nelson was hit and later came below twice. Beatty, Victory’s surgeon, attended. This note covers those hours only. Beatty’s life, Greenwich, the autopsy, and surgical technique stay on RESEARCH_QUEUE. The unused person title Beatty William — Surgeon HMS Victory remains a red-link.²

Beatty’s 1807 narrative records the bedside exchanges with Hardy: the order to anchor, the request that Hardy take care of Lady Hamilton, and the kiss on the cheek and then the forehead. The last short words Beatty gives are addressed to Burke and Scott, not to Hardy. Verbatim lines live on the Beatty source card. The Victorian “kismet” reading is already rejected on the Hardy note; Q — Was it Kiss me Hardy or Kismet Hardy stays unwritten.³

The Nelson biography already records that the body was brought home in a brandy cask. This note does not expand that.
