Overview

The Latona pendant stays on Latona Broad Pendant — English Harbour. This note covers the Nevis escort only. Southey says a French frigate from Martinico, with two general officers and some engineers on board, was sent to survey the British sugar islands. Nelson gave orders to follow them.1

The Escort

Southey places Boreas at anchor in Nevis Road after the hurricane months when the frigate passed to leeward, close along shore. The next day he came up with them at anchor in the roads of St. Eustatia and anchored about two cables’ length on the frigate’s quarter. Invited by the Dutch governor to dinner, he told the French captain he would accompany him in Boreas. He then followed them close, in spite of all their attempts to elude him, until they gave up that purpose and beat up for Martinico.2

The four American vessels stay on Island Colours — Four Americans Nevis.
