Overview

The Posting

Southey says two ships were fitting out for a voyage of discovery toward the North Pole. By his uncle’s interest Nelson was admitted as coxswain under Capt. Lutwidge, second in command. The Hon. Capt. Constantine John Phipps volunteered. The Racehorse and Carcass bombs were selected as the strongest ships. They sailed from the Nore on the fourth of June.²
