Overview

HMS Vanguard — Nelson’s Nile Flagship already records the 1 August flagship. The May gale stays on Vanguard Foremast — Gulf of Lyons. The inside passage stays on HMS Goliath — 74-gun Third Rate. This note covers the six colours on the outer side only.¹

The Colours

Southey says that while the advanced ships doubled the French line, the Vanguard was the first that anchored on the outer side of the enemy, within half-pistol-shot of their third ship, the Spartiate. Nelson had six colours flying in different parts of his rigging, lest they should be shot away. He veered half a cable, and instantly opened a tremendous fire.²
