Overview

HMS Captain — 74-gun Third Rate already records the 14 February wear and boarding. Latona Broad Pendant — English Harbour already records a different pendant strike. This note covers the 13 February shift only.¹

The Shift

Southey says that off the mouth of the Straits he fell in with the Spanish fleet; and on the 13th of February, reaching the station off Cape St. Vincent’s, communicated this intelligence to Sir John Jervis. He was now directed to shift his broad pendant on board the Captain, 74; and, before sunset, the signal was made to prepare for action, and to keep, during the night, in close order.²

The 14 February wear stays on HMS Captain — 74-gun Third Rate. The Patent Bridge stays on Nelson’s Patent Bridge for Boarding First Rates. This page does not invent a captain’s person-note, or recopy the 14 February boarding.
