Hub
The age of sail is the foundational context of this entire vault: a period bounded roughly by the 1650s (when the line-of-battle became standard tactics) and the 1830s (when steam propulsion began to transform naval warfare), in which wooden warships powered by the wind fought the defining battles of European and global history. Within that arc, the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars of 1793-1815 represent the culminating moment — when the tactical, technological, and organisational systems developed over 150 years were pushed to their absolute limits. This subdomain functions as the era-context hub connecting all the vault’s themes: ship technology, naval tactics, officer culture, crew sociology, and the geopolitical framework all existed within this age’s specific material and intellectual constraints. It is adjacent to every other subdomain in the vault and provides the primary temporal-technological frame for analysis.
