Overview

The four seizures stay on Island Colours — Four Americans Nevis. The eight-week restraint stays on Eight Weeks Duresse — Nevis. This note covers the memorial and the Register Act only. Southey places that memorial during the progress of the Nevis business, after the four ships had been condemned.¹

The Memorial

Southey says Nelson sent a memorial home to the king. In consequence of that memorial, orders were issued that he should be defended at the expense of the crown. Upon the representations which he made at the same time to the secretary of state, and the suggestions with which he accompanied them, the Register Act was framed. The sanction of government, and the approbation of his conduct which it implied, were highly gratifying to him.²
