Overview

The Boat

Nelson’s letter to Locker, dated Badger, 13 May 1779, says he was sorry for the uneasiness about men pressed from Amity Hall. At Port Antonio he took the ships for part of the Cork fleet and sent the boat for men, with orders not to press from homeward-bound ships. The boat left two ships alone. Thirty-five men on board Amity Hall tempted them to bring five. Nelson was not pleased, and came into port on purpose to return them. The master came aboard with abusive language and spoke of the law. Nelson returned two men and a Neutral, and told the master he should keep the other two for that behaviour. He asked Locker to mention that the master had forgotten to advertise two deserters from Badger.2
